05 / THE PRACTICAL EDITION
Travel with confidence.
A little preparation can make every journey better.
When to visit
There is no single best season: the climate changes by altitude and region. Dry periods often fall around December–March and July–August in several Andean areas, but rainfall patterns vary.
Money & payments
Cards work well in larger cities; carry small COP notes for markets, local transport and rural areas. Choose COP when a terminal offers currency conversion.
Health & safety
Check route-specific vaccination advice, especially for tropical or jungle regions. Altitude is significant in Bogotá. Take out travel insurance and check official advisories.
Getting around
Domestic flights save time on long routes. In cities, use registered providers or reputable mobility apps; allow extra time for traffic and airport transfers.
Food & culture
Arepas, ajiaco, bandeja paisa, fresh fruit and outstanding coffee. Try local specialties while checking water and food hygiene in remote areas.
Photography notes
The historic streets of Cartagena shine at dawn; the hills of the coffee region are magical with low cloud, and Bogotá offers dramatic urban contrasts.
