Kruger’s granite hills and extraordinary bushveld.
Berg-en-Dal is a SANParks main rest camp within Kruger National Park. It lies in the southwest beside Matjulu Spruit, in rolling hills and mountain bushveld. It is not an independent reserve: it is an official base for lodging and safaris inside the park.
The landscape supports giraffe, kudu, impala, elephant, klipspringer and rhinoceros; leopard and African wild dog also occur in the region. Lion is generally associated with lower plains on routes towards Skukuza and Crocodile Bridge. No species is guaranteed.

Visual transparency: original landscapes are editorial representations of southwestern Kruger habitats, not verified photographs at specific coordinates. Reused animal imagery is not evidence of sightings.

Wildlife amongst granite hills.
SANParks lists white rhino, kudu, impala, giraffe, elephant, reedbuck, klipspringer, grey rhebok and warthog here, as well as leopard and wild dog. Scarlet-chested sunbird and Heuglin’s robin are among its suggested birds. Dense woodland and hills enrich the safari but make some sightings more difficult.
We do not publish rhino locations, tracking routes or live sighting details. Nor do we promise all Big Five. Keep your distance, never harass wildlife and stay on authorised roads.
Premium wildlife sighting explorer
Month, time of day, area and safari hours change an editorial opportunity score for each animal. Explore and compare conditions.
Fine-tune your safari
These are comparative opportunity scores (0–100) based on editorial assumptions about habitat, broad seasonality, crepuscular activity and viewing effort. They are NOT measured sighting rates, scientific percentages or actual chances of encountering animals. SANParks does NOT publish these scores; wildlife cannot be guaranteed. Never use this estimate for safety decisions.
Read the scoring methodology
Each species starts with an unobserved editorial reference index; moderate seasonal, location and time factors are applied, along with a diminishing-return hours factor. Scores are capped to 0–100. Change controls to see how assumptions affect outputs. No real-time or verified sighting records are used.
Premium Big Five calculator
This second calculator focuses only on elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhinoceros. It combines month, time window, area and observation hours to produce a comparative score per species and an editorial reading of the whole set.
These percentages remain editorial comparative scores. Use them to compare scenarios, not to promise a real outcome. In Berg-en-Dal, the rocky hills, birds and specialised antelope are equally worth celebrating.

Stock photography and video
Granite silhouettes, giraffe, birds, roads and side-lit dawn views create diverse content. Commercial use may require specific SANParks permission; check before shooting for stock.
Hillside & woodland birds
Look for sunbirds and robin-chats in dense vegetation early in the day; southern spring/summer may add migratory birds. Listen first and avoid disturbing them.
Responsible self-drive
S110 and S120 may take longer due to terrain, stops and wildlife. Leave your vehicle only in designated areas, avoid closed roads and return to Berg-en-Dal with time to spare.
