A place worth experiencing.
Paraguay combines Asunción’s city life with small towns, impressive waterfalls and some of the continent’s most evocative Jesuit mission ruins. Distances matter, so it pays to spend several nights in each area rather than race through the map.

05 / THE PRACTICAL EDITION
Travel with confidence.
A little preparation can make every journey better.
When to visit
The cooler, generally drier months from May to September are often comfortable for sightseeing; summer can be very hot and humid, especially away from the river.
Money & payments
The guaraní is the official currency. Carry cash for small towns, markets and local buses; cards are more common in city hotels and larger shops.
Health & safety
Check yellow-fever requirements when arriving from risk areas, and follow up-to-date health advice. Use insect repellent, sun protection and travel insurance.
Getting around
Plan intercity buses or a rental car carefully. Allow time for roads, distances and weather; check current bus schedules locally.
Food & culture
Chipa, sopa paraguaya, mbejú and tereré are local staples. Spanish and Guaraní form part of everyday life and culture.
Photography notes
Asunción’s Costanera rewards late-afternoon light; the red stone of the Jesuit ruins glows near sunset and Monday Falls works well with softer skies.
