Johannesburg The city that tells South Africa’s story.
Moving history, creative energy, vibrant districts and a new way to discover the City of Gold. Build your route and decide what deserves your time.
A city to understand, feel and photograph.
Johannesburg is not a compact, monument-filled walking city. Its highlights lie kilometres apart: this guide groups them by area, uses realistic visit times and separates essentials from extras.
An overnight stop may work as a transit break, but two to three full days deliver a richer experience. For Soweto and parts of the inner city, consider a local guide and organised transfers.

The planner that tells you what to see — and what to save for later.
Choose full days, excluding flights and airport transfers. Recommendations are indicative and leave space for moving between districts.

The details that make the journey.
Getting there
O. R. Tambo is the main airport. Arrange your transfer in advance, especially for night arrivals.
Getting around
Use a reliable driver or booked ride for Soweto, the CBD and Rosebank; Gautrain can cover selected legs.
Safety
Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas, especially after dark. Keep valuables discreet and visit Soweto and Ponte with professional guides.
Where to stay
Rosebank, Sandton and Melrose can be convenient bases thanks to hotels, food and transport; compare security and journey times.
Photography & stock
Ask about photography permissions in museums and tours, especially for commercial use. Seek consent or releases for recognisable people.
Best season
April to September is often drier than summer with fewer thunderstorms, though winter nights can be cold.
Hours & bookings
The Apartheid Museum currently states Tuesday–Sunday opening; check holidays. Book guided tours early and check temporary closures.
Realistic pacing
Allow for traffic and admission delays. Two days work better without trying to cram too many museums into a morning.
